Mental exhaustion, also known as mental fatigue, is very common among people who constantly have rough days or for people who simply work too hard. Preventing mental fatigue should be prioritized as it can cause other physical and mental health problems.
In addition, beating mental exhaustion will give you a more positive outlook in life thereby providing you the energy to better tackle your day. If you are feeling mentally exhausted lately, here are five tips to help you overcome the situation.
Asses Your Situation
The first step to overcome exhaustion is assessing its root causes.
Are you working too many hours, have too much school load, feel poor self-esteem, or do you experience a lot of emotional turmoils?
Figure out what stresses you need to cut out from your life in order to gain back your mental stability. If you cannot find any particular issue, mental exhaustion could possibly be caused by poor or suboptimal health.
Poor eating habits contribute to a lack of energy. If you think this is the problem, you can reverse it by choosing a healthier diet. Quit eating processed and sugary foods and instead get more fruits, vegetables, and fiber in your diet.
Perhaps you can take health supplements and multivitamins to boost your immune system and make sure you have all the nutrients you need.
There is no need to make time to go to the gym, you can simp become physically active in tackling your daily duties. Taking simple measures like climbing up the stairs daily instead of riding the elevator or walking from your house to the park with the kids can already help improve fitness.
As long as you get those muscles moving every day, your body will continue releasing the feel-good hormones called endorphins which boost the internal feeling of joy and satisfaction. Keeping fit will also decrease your risk of diabetes, stroke, and other health issues that can come down the line. Such diseases or even prediabetes will make you feel tired anyway, so one more reason to avoid them.
Get Good Quality Sleep
During sleep, your body gets to repair itself from the cell damages that occurred during the day – this includes cellular repair, production of collagen and healing physical micro-traumas. Get more rest as sleep deprivation will do nothing but contribute to your mental exhaustion.
Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep to feel refreshed in the morning. If it helps, try to create a relaxing environment before bedtime. Set up scented candles or add some essential oils to your air diffuser.
Turn off your television at least one hour before your bedtime and instead, read a good book. Drinking some herbal tea will also help you relax.
Learn To Say “NO”
Over-extending favors or requests from people will take up some of your time. If it is not important, learn to say no. Master the skill to only stick to your duties and responsibilities at work. Being a team player is a good trait to possess, but if such tasks are outside your responsibilities, remind your colleagues or boss that these duties may not be a part of your job description.
Attending social events can also consume time. If it is not important, slow down your attendance to social gatherings. Turn down invitations for night outs and parties that may involve alcohol consumption. Saying no to such offers will give you more free time to rest and enjoy quieter activities.
Talk To Friends And Family
It does not have to be a healthcare professional. Simply talking to your spouse, close friends or family about the things weighing on your mind will help take some load off. You may not necessarily need any sort of advice, but talking to someone can help overcome mental tiredness.
Do not feel like you are burdening them. In fact, they might even feel glad and appreciative that you trust them enough to turn for their support. Mental exhaustion usually entails overthinking and getting insights from close friends and family will assist you get a better grasp of your situation.
