You’ve had it happen a million times. You have a to-do list a mile long and yet when you sit down to do it you can’t seem to get it done.
For some reason, productivity just seems to escape you. No matter how much you try to do the work, you can’t seem to find the energy to do it.
Or maybe you’ve been “doing” things all day and then you look back and realize that you didn’t actually get anything done. You were busy, but not productive.
It seems like people think that productivity will just come to them if they sit down to work on things. But like anything else in life, productivity is something you have to work on. There are many things you can do to level up your productivity, but here are 3 simple ideas to get you started.
Focus on One Thing
When we have so many things to do, we easily get overwhelmed and bogged down by the sheer volume. And then we end up not doing anything.
Instead of focusing on the many things that you need to accomplish, pick the most important thing that needs to happen. What is the one thing that needs to be completed today to make you successful?
Really hone in on this one thing and don’t let any of the other things distract you. Your sole mission for the rest of the day is to do that important task. That’s it, nothing more.
Getting really focused on this will give you a defined goal and it will set you up for success because all you have to do is accomplish one thing. And I know that you are capable of making that happen.
When you get that one thing completed, you will feel a huge sense of accomplishment. No matter what the task is, just achieving something will give you the boost of momentum to be productive the next day and the next.
If you finish that one thing, you can work on other tasks as well but know that you don’t have to pressure yourself to complete them. Eventually though, you will start to see how amazing it feels to accomplish something and your productivity will become unstoppable.
If you keep this momentum up, you won’t find it very hard to be productive all throughout your day.
Clear Out the Noise
We can get so overloaded with information and stimulation in our lives. Everything from TV, social media, our phones, and even our friends and family are trying to get our attention.
With all of this noise and distractions going on, it’s hard to really get productive. If you find yourself having a hard time focusing on what you need to get done (i.e. the one thing), then you need to learn to clear out that excess noise.
Go to a quiet place where you don’t feel bombarded with information all the time. Put your phone on silent for a while and turn off the TV and social media. Relax, it’s not forever, but you need to step away from the distractions for a little while.
Give yourself an allotted amount of time where you will be distraction-free and really focus your energy and efforts and that one thing.
Clearing out the excess noise of the world sometimes is all we need to get those productivity muscles working and our energy flowing.
Take a Break
Yes, sometimes in order to be productive we need to take a break from our work.
I know you’re thinking that sounds counter productive. But if you really think about it, it makes sense. We are not wired to work continuously at something and still be able to produce results.
We aren’t machines that can constantly pump out great work. If you’re trying to do something but failing miserably at being productive, give yourself a break.
Get up from your desk, and put down your work for a few minutes. Sometimes you may only need 5 minutes or you may need longer, like 10-15 minutes.
Let your brain take a breather from the work you are trying to do and focus on something positive for a little bit.
Go outside for a walk, or read a good book for a few minutes. Have a dance party by yourself or do some meditation. Whatever works for you.
Getting out of your head for a while will help you come back to your work more focused and allow you to be more productive.
But be warned, although it’s good to take a break, don’t let this turn into taking the rest of the day off. Don’t take too much time off (i.e. more than 30 minutes) and don’t do activities like watching TV. This could lead you to procrastinate even more and feel even less productive.
